Bikesafe 2010

North Yorkshire Police is offering bikers the chance to improve their riding skills with a series of Bikesafe workshops.

The workshops, which will be held from March to August, are part of the force's continuing drive to reduce road casualties in tandem with the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership.

With motorcycles getting faster and more powerful it is important that riders have the necessary skills to ensure they can handle their machines.

The workshops are designed to enhance the skills riders already have in order to protect their safety on the roads.

Traffic Sergeant Pete Mason, the force's Bikesafe co-ordinator, said: "It is a well-known fact that very few riders appreciate the need or are willing to pay for further training once passing their DSA bike test. We aim to bridge the gap between that basic skill level and the kind of further training that enables riders to combine tremendous enjoyment with a much higher level of personal safety."

The workshop, which costs £50 and consists of two modules, will benefit the majority of motorcyclists holding a full bike licence.

Module one (9.30am - 12pm) is in the training room, at Thirsk Police Office. It is an informal discussion concentrating on advanced riding techniques, reading bends, overtaking, observation, filtering, slow speed control and group riding.

Lunch (12pm - 1pm) is not provided, so please bring your own.

Module two (1pm - 4pm) consists of an initial demonstration of advanced riding by an observer, followed by a two-hour assessed ride on a picturesque route enabling riders to develop their riding by practising tips from module one.

On completion, all participants receive a free goody bag, certificate of attendance, written feedback outlining any areas requiring further development and a £50 voucher towards further training with accredited providers.
