Selby District (Rural) Safer Neighbourhood Area

Inspector Richard Abbott

Please note that the Safer Neighbourhood structure in Selby changed on 1 April. The new Selby District (Town) Safer Neighbourhood Area covers the wards of Selby North, Selby West, Selby South and Brayton. The new Selby District (Rural) Safer Neighbourhood Area covers all other wards within the district.

This is my third year with you all, as police inspector for the area. The North Yorkshire policing area of Selby District (Rural) covers the wards of Appleton Roebuck, Barlby, Camblesforth, Cawood with Wistow, Eggborough, Fairburn with Brotherton, Hambleton, Hemingbrough, Monk Fryston and South Milford, North Duffield, Riccall with Escrick, Saxton and Ulleskelf, Sherburn in Elmet, Tadcaster East, Tadcaster West and Whitley.

Each area has a team of police officers and police community support officers, who are dedicated to their areas, working solely with their communities. I have encouraged them all to engage with you and to attempt to learn from you what your priorities are for your policing team.  Having agreed these priorities we will then work with our partners, e.g. Selby District Council and North Yorkshire Fire Service, to deliver a solution. These will be published both here and by other means.

We have set up police surgeries in your areas and have placed police letter boxes in various local locations, such as post offices, where you can leave us information as to the current problems you would wish us to tackle. Our mobile police offices will call in your area.  Please use these facilities to inform us of what you wish us to address.

In partnership with other agencies we run the Joint Action Groups (JAGs) and in Tadcaster and the Southern area, the Community Engagement Forum (CEF).  I urge you to take part, tasking us all with solving your priority problems. We are here and here to stay. Please take the time to inform us where we can make the biggest difference.  Some fantastic solutions have been delivered.  One example is in addressing the problem of poaching and hare coursing.  From the solution a fantastic "Rural Watch" group was set up, now numbering over 200!  By voicing your opinions you can help us to help you.
