Skipton is a historic market town, located in Craven District. It is a popular tourist destination and is commonly known as the 'Gateway to the Dales'.

A market is held on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday and attracts many hundreds of visitors to the town on a weekly basis.

The World Cup came and went with the expectation of the nation (and Skipton) on the England team's shoulders and as usual they let us all down again! From a Policing point of view it was a bit of a logistical nightmare due to the possibility of different dates for knock out matches. The warm weather assisted in large numbers of people watching the matches at local pubs add private BBQs, and on the whole everyone behaved well despite the inevitable disappointment. Only small pockets of trouble were firmly dealt with. Skipton Gala also passed without incident which created a fantastic family atmosphere and a great advert to anyone visiting the town.

Unfortunately the warm summer weather played host to another drowning tragedy at Bolton Abbey. We cant stress enough the dangers of entering natural water courses in the hot weather. There are strong under currents and other associated dangers which quickly affect those who enter the water. Please take heed of the signs, they are there for a reason, and hopefully we will avoid any future tragedies.
