Meet the Chief Constable and the other senior officers who lead North Yorkshire Police.

Chief, senior officers and new recruits

Led by a Chief Constable and a Strategic Leadership Team, North Yorkshire Police is the largest single county force in England, covering an area of 3,200 square miles, policing a population of 788,844 people (mid 2007 census), with 6,000 miles of road. As of December 2008, North Yorkshire Police employs 1,535 police officers and 1,325 police staff.

There are 18 Inspector-led Safer Neighbourhood Areas throughout North Yorkshire and the City of York.

  • Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell

    Grahame Maxwell took up the post as Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police in May 2007. He brings nearly 25 years of policing experience to the role, ranging from a PC on the beat in Middlesbrough through to his previous post as Deputy Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police.

  • Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs

    Adam Briggs joined North Yorkshire Police in June 2007, having previously held the post of Assistant Chief Constable (Crime and Support) at Cleveland Police. During his time at Cleveland, Adam established a number of successful operations and initiatives. These included 'Operation Sabre', a series of ongoing raids targeting those responsible for drugs, volume crime and anti-social behaviour.

  • Assistant Chief Constable Sue Cross

    Sue Cross was appointed in December 2008. She has 24 years' policing experience spanning three forces. She served with West Yorkshire Police up to Chief Inspector where she was uniform operations in Huddersfield and latterly Head of Economic Crime. In Cleveland she worked as Superintendent Crime Manager at Middlesbrough and then Head of Professional Standards.

  • Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick

    Tim Madgwick joined North Yorkshire Police in 1988 at the age of thirty, after careers in both education and private business. He served in York as a Constable, Sergeant and Inspector. In this latter role he was in charge of the City Centre and played a significant role in North Yorkshire Police's response to the major flooding that affected the city in 2000.

  • Chief Finance Officer Joanna Carter

    Joanna Carter joined North Yorkshire Police in September 2005 as Director of Finance. In 2007 she was appointed to the position of Chief Finance Officer which incorporates the roles of Treasurer of the North Yorkshire Police Authority and force Chief Officer. She is the only person in the country to hold the dual role which demonstrates the innovative approach of the Authority and Chief Constable to resource management and corporate delivery.

  • Chief of Staff Iain Spittal

    Iain joined North Yorkshire Police (NYP) in September 1986 at the age of 19. He undertook his probationary period as a constable on the beat in Ryedale. At three years service he transferred to road policing duties where he qualified as an advanced car driver and motorcyclist.
