North Yorkshire Police is committed to ensuring our citizens and staff are treated fairly and sensitively regardless of gender, ethnic origin, religious belief, sex or change of gender, marital status, family status, disability, age, sexual orientation or any other condition or requirement which places a person at a disadvantage.
We have a dedicated Diversity Unit that ensure we comply with relevant legislation and good practice, and to provide a co-ordinated approach to tackling the issues arising out of a number of local and national reports into how the police service deals with minority group issues, both internally and externally. we liaise with other organisations and community groups to build positive relationships.
We believe that respect for diversity is essential to achieving our objectives. Without the trust and confidence of our diverse communities, we will not have the full consent and co-operation of all those we serve and thus will not achieve excellence in our policing service.
We provide a number of training courses in diversity for our staff. All new recruits participate in a course aimed at ensuring they have a sound understanding of our commitment to diversity and the importance it plays in our business. In particular, understanding diversity is an integral part of every police officer's training which involves them working directly with diverse communities.
However, we believe that training is not enough. The key way in which we can maximise our best practice and provide an excellent policing service for our diverse communities is by having a diverse workforce. To achieve this we are committed to attracting, retaining and progressing employees from under represented groups We can only do this by creating an organisation in which a positive approach to diversity is an integral part of our culture.
It is important that we develop a greater understanding of the experiences of our diverse communities.
We have a Race Equality scheme, Disability Scheme and Gender Scheme, which set out our commitment, against these strands, we also have a Diversity Strategy which aims to create a structured approach to integrating diversity within our leadership, staff performance, policies, partnerships, resources and processes. This will ensure equality and diversity is embedded in everything we do.
