Scarborough police are investigating after an expensive mountain bike was stolen from North Marine Road.

The silver Specialised Rockhopper, worth approximately £600, was taken when the owner left it resting against a parking meter as he changed a tyre on his car, at around 12pm on Sunday 10 July 2011.

Officers have been checking CCTV footage in the area in an attempt to identify the offender and are now asking for any witnesses to the theft to come forward.

PC Paul Rogers, of Scarborough police, said: "This was clearly an opportunist theft which has deprived the victim of a fairly high-value bike.

"The incident occurred on a busy road in broad daylight, therefore I am hoping that someone will have witnessed what happened.

"I am urging anyone who witnessed the theft or has been offered a similar bike for sale recently, to contact the police or Crimestoppers with information."

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Paul Rogers, of Scarborough police, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110114265.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
