The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work alongside, and support, their local police.
Special Constables play a crucial role in fighting crime and making our streets safer. Specials come from many different backgrounds and walks of life. They volunteer for a minimum of sixteen hours' duty per month, and form a vital link between their community and the police service.
There are 147 Special Constables in North Yorkshire Police (as of February 2013). Once appointed, Specials have to complete a training programme, after which they have the same powers as regular police officers and wear a similar uniform.
"North Yorkshire Police are not currently accepting applications for Special Constables. However as part of my pledge within the Police and Crime Plan to increase the number of Special Constables working for North Yorkshire Police a new campaign will be launched soon, so please check back regularly to keep up to date on progress.
"Special Constables contribute an enormous amount across North Yorkshire and are key to keeping the county the safest in England. The hours given by each Special - on top of their day job - are a great demonstration of the commitment that they have, alongside our regular officers, to keep our communities safe and put victims first.
"I would like to give my thanks to all who already give their time to help us reduce harm across the county and would encourage anyone who would thinks that they would like to contribute to apply when we launch our new recruitment campaign."
- Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire
