Serious Assault In Harrogate - Appeal For Witnesses

Harrogate CID is investigating a serious assault on a man that occurred in the King Edward's Drive area of the town during the early hours of Sunday morning (11 January 2009).

The incident was reported at 1.23am after a 56-year-old man was attacked and sustained serious facial injuries whilst he was walking past the bus stop outside the Post Office.

It is believed the motive of the attack was robbery.

The victim, who lives in the Malton area but was visiting family in Harrogate, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance where he is currently in a "stable" condition.

As mentioned in the initial appeal that went on the Media Line on Sunday afternoon, two men were seen running away following the attack.

It is known that there were a number of people in the area at the time and they have been urged to contact North Yorkshire Police about the incident.

Detective Sergeant Nichola Holden, who is leading the investigation, said: "I am appealing to anyone who was in the King Edward's Drive area between 12 midnight and 2am on Sunday 11 January to contact the North Yorkshire Police Control Room, quoting 'Serious Assault - King Edward's Drive'.

"We have had a number of witnesses who have been in touch with information already.

"However, it is vital that the others who were in the area and saw the incident unfold or noticed the two men running away to come forward to help identify those responsible and trace further potential witnesses."
