Police seek vital witness to York assault

Detectives in York are appealing for a vital witness to come forward following an assault in the city.

Incident

It occurred at 6.30pm on Friday 12 October 2012, as two men from Leeds were walking along Nunnery Lane towards the railway station. They were approached from behind before being assaulted. Both men were knocked unconscious, one of them also suffered a broken ankle. They were treated at York District Hospital before being released.
 
Following the incident the men were assisted by a member of the public, who is believed to have witnessed the assault.
 
Detective Constable Martin Hinchliffe, of York CID, said: "I would like to thank the person who helped the victims after they were assaulted. Unfortunately they did not leave their details with either of the men and I urge the witness to come forward as I believe that they may have vital information about the people responsible for the attack.
 
DC Hinchliffe added: "I am also appealing to anyone else who may have witnessed the assault taking place or can identify those responsible to contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible."
