Request
I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from North Yorkshire Police. Please may you provide me with:
• The total number of driving offences recorded in the last 2 years in the York city area
• A breakdown of the total number of driving offences recorded in the last 2 years in the York city area by category, for example: dangerous driving, careless or inconsiderate driving, etc.
Clarification Received
Please can you share the total number of driving offences which were classed as ‘careless or inconsiderate driving’. If possible, please only include those offences which did not result in death or serious injury. I refer to the following endorsement codes: (Source: https://www.gov.uk/penalty-points-endorsements/endorsement-codes-and-penalty-points):
CD10 - Driving without due care and attention
CD20 - Driving without reasonable consideration for other road users
CD30 - Driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users
Could you please firstly provide the total number of these offences in the last two years in the York city area, and then provide a breakdown of this total, for example: X number of offences for driving without due care and attention, X number of offences for driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, etc.
I would also like to clarify the time frame “in the last two years”. This refers to the last two years up until, and including, your most recently available date/month.
If the most recently available date to search for offences is 30/11/2022, then the last two years are 30/11/2020 – 30/11/2022.
Or, if the last available time period is the month of October, then the time range is October 2020 – October 2022.

There are several issues with this request which can explain why the data pool is so small.
Firstly, due to the nature of our recording systems when an individual is arrested it is typically due to a more serious offence occurring at the same time. Meaning not all subjects arrested for the above codes are held within the data retrieved.
Furthermore, my colleagues and I have done some exploring around driving without due care and attention, and without reasonable consideration, and it appears as though, usually, a fixed penalty notice is issued however we are unable to collate that information due to how the information is recorded.
Further information regarding traffic offences can be found on our website by following the below link.
