Request:
I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request information for the following two years:
For each of the two years above, please could you tell me:
Q1. How many domestic abuse-related crimes were recorded by the force?
Q2. What percentage of all offences recorded by the police during this time did domestic abuse-related crimes represent?
Q3. The total number of police officers employed by the force at that time.
Q4. The total number of police officers that had been given domestic abuse training.
Response:
Extent and Result of Searches to Locate Information
To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted within North Yorkshire Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by North Yorkshire Police.
Decision
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you.
Q1 & Q1a. Please see the table below the total amount of domestic abuse crimes where a victim is linked, recorded for the period between 01 April 2028 to 31 March 2019 and 01 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, broken down by victim gender.

Q2. No information held, as we do not record percentages.
Q3. Some of the information you have requested is published on the Government website under the following link:
Police workforce England and Wales statistics - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
I have therefore decided to exempt providing you with a partial response to question Q3 pursuant to Section 21 Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act). Please see the exemption explanation below.
As of 31 March 2024 the total number of officers employed was 3429 of those 1683 were female.
Please note, that we can only provide point in time data due to the nature of the information being dynamic.
Q4. Unfortunately to extract this information would exceed the time allowed under the act. As this would require a manual review of the training records for each police officer employed at the time requested, to establish if they had been given domestic abuse training.
Exemption Explanation
Section 17 of the Act requires North Yorkshire Police, when refusing to provide such information (because the information is exempt) to provide you the applicant with a notice which: (a) states that fact, (b) specifies the exemption in question and (c) states (if that would not otherwise be apparent) why the exemption applies.
Section 21 – Information Reasonably Accessible by Other Means
Section 21 is an absolute class based exemption and I am not required to consider the harm or public interest when applying this exemption.
Pursuant to Section 17(1) of the Act this letter acts as a Refusal Notice in response to your request.
Please note that systems used for recording information are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. It should be noted therefore that this force’s response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other responses you may receive.
