FOI Operation Snap Process (0256-2022/23)

I am hoping you can provide some information in relation to how your force manages dashcam submissions of possible driving offences.

In particular, I am hoping to understand how you decide to share the information of what action the force has chosen to take with the driver who is alleged to have committed an offence.

I would be happy to email an example letter that Derbyshire police sent to me after I had submitted to them dashcam footage. I believe Derbyshire is setting an excellent example of informing victims of the actions they have chosen to pursue.

Please would you be able to provide the following information on how your force informs those who submit dashcam / bicycle camera footage to you.

1) Do you inform those who submit footage of the action you have chosen to take, even if this is 'No further action'?

2a) If yes, do you commit to providing this information in a certain timeframe?

2b) If no, for what reason is this your policy?

Response

Extent and Result of Searches to Locate Information

To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted within North Yorkshire Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by North Yorkshire Police.

Decision

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you.

  1. North Yorkshire Police do not currently inform the reporting person of the outcome of their submission.
  2. North Yorkshire Police are currently looking to amend the policy in relation to Operation Snap submissions to include informing the reporting person of the outcome. There is no date set for when this change may happen.

Please note that systems used for recording information are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data.  It should be noted therefore that this force’s response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other responses you may receive.
