A man spent his birthday in a police cell after shockingly dangerous driving through York.
Scott Anthony Bone, 37, crashed off the road after a police pursuit lasting 15 minutes.
In the early hours of 9 October 2024 – Bone’s birthday – he was spotted behind the wheel of a black Seat Ibiza on Water Lane. He drove off at speed.
Pursued throughout by North Yorkshire Police officers, he drove well in excess of the speed limit, went through a red light, and turned off his car’s lights on unlit sections of road – before crashing into a field on the outskirts of the city.
Bone, from York, then ran from the vehicle.
In custody, he failed to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, and was found to be in possession of pregabalin tablets that hadn’t been prescribed to him.
He was charged, and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possessing a class C drug, failing to provide a specimen of breath, and obstructing police.
At York Crown Court today, he was given a 12 month sentence, suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to undertake drug and alcohol rehabiliation treatment, and carry out unpaid work for 280 hours. He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months, and must pay costs and a surcharge totalling £387.
Traffic Sergeant Ryan Lyth, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said: “Bone's behaviour was totally unacceptable – we will continue to target and pursue offenders like him who cause a danger on our roads.”
