Man charged with murder in Thornton-le-Dale

North Yorkshire Police can now confirm the 33 year old man from Leeds arrested in connection with this incident has been charged with murder. He is due to appear at York Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (8 January 2022).

Continued policing activity will take place at the address in the coming days and the public can expect to see an increased policing presence in the local area.

We can confirm that the man arrested on suspicion of murder is 33 years old and from the Leeds area.

North Yorkshire Police have been granted authority for the continued detention of the man arrested to allow for further enquiries to be undertaken.

Statement from North Yorkshire Police Detective Superintendent Wayne Fox:

"Enquiries are continuing in our efforts to establish the circumstances which led to the death of a local woman on Wednesday January 5^th 2022. I want to reassure the local community that, whilst this is a tragic event, North Yorkshire Police are satisfied that we are currently dealing with an isolated incident.

"Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the family of the woman who sadly lost her life and they are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

"Further details will be released when possible.

UPDATE: 6.04pm 5 January 2022

Police are at the scene of a serious incident at a residential property on High Street in Thornton-le-Dale which took place shortly before 12pm today (5 January 2022).

We can confirm that a woman was found deceased at the property and this is currently being treated as a murder investigation.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident. The man remains in police custody.

A scene guard is currently in place and is expected to remain for some time.
