Victim received emergency treatment from police officers who rushed her to hospital following the “extremely brutal and frightening attack”

A Scarborough man has been jailed for 16 years and given an extended licence of four years, for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Jack Darrion Sutton, aged 23, of Mount View Avenue, was sentenced at York Crown Court today (Tuesday 19 April 2022) after pleading guilty to the offence which he carried out on Londesborough Road at around 11.30pm on Friday 10 December last year.

Sutton admitted stabbing the 23-year-old woman multiple times on her face, arms and chest during the incident.

The attending police officers stemmed the bleeding and “blue lighted” the victim to Scarborough Hospital in their van.

She was then transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary where she underwent emergency treatment.

Sutton ran away from the scene of the stabbing and a firearms operation was put in place to track him down and get him into custody.

A police helicopter was scrambled to support the search.

This led to Sutton being located and arrested in a back garden on Mount View Avenue, just over an hour after the incident was reported.

A detailed investigation by Scarborough and Ryedale CID secured the guilty pleas for attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon, and the significant sentence handed out by the court.

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Wright, Crime Commander of Scarborough and Ryedale Police, said:

“This was an extremely brutal and frightening attack in which the victim was very lucky to escape with her life.

“Sutton now accepts that his actions that night were reprehensible and could have resulted in fatal injuries to the brave victim.

“He now has plenty of time to reflect on this incident and hopefully take on board every opportunity to reform his ways.

“Deserved praise and gratitude also go to our fast-acting Response Team colleagues who were first on the scene.

“They gave the victim emergency first aid and quickly got her to the hospital in their police van before an ambulance could be dispatched.

“They are a credit to themselves and reflect the proud values and traditions of North Yorkshire Police officers and staff.”

*As a victim of domestic violence, we have chosen not to name the woman who was attacked by Sutton in this report.
