Incident at York college - Update 5.28pm Thurday 16 March 2023
Officers will be at the college tomorrow to provide reassurance to students and staff.
Last night, police officers carried out an extensive search of the college and the immediate area around it. This search involved the use of specialist resources which included detection dogs and a police helicopter.
Officers were satisfied there was no risk to the college or wider public and the cordon was lifted shortly after 9.30pm.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested today (Thursday 16 March 2023) on suspicion of making hoax bomb threats.
Update: he has subsequently been released on bail pending further enquiries.
This incident is not related to yesterday’s emergency services training exercise that was held in York.
Statement on incident at York College
Police were contacted at 4.10pm today (Wednesday 15 March) by York College who had been alerted to a possible suspicious object on their campus.
Officers attended and assisted college staff in evacuating the building.
Tadcaster Road was closed and a cordon was put in place to ensure the safety of members of the public.
A search of the campus was completed and nothing was found.
Tadcaster Road was open at 7.15pm and the cordon on the college campus was lifted at 9.38pm.
An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
Original statment:
Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on Tadcaster Road in York.
A cordon is in place and the road is currently closed in both directions between York College and the Tesco roundabout.
Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.
