The smell of cannabis tipped off officers about suspected criminal activity in Selby.
On the evening of Monday 3 June 2024, our teams were on foot patrol in the town centre, when officers noticed the distinctive smell coming from an alleyway off Gowthorpe.
We target our high-visibility patrols based on police intelligence and information from members of the public, aiming to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
On further investigation, our officers found a group of men, one of whom appeared to be smoking cannabis. He was stopped and searched, and officers located cannabis and a silver-coloured handgun in a holdall.
A later search of his home address uncovered a large number of individual bags of cannabis, a set of scales, and a tin of air gun pellets.
The man, 36, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm, and possessing cannabis. He remains in police custody at this time.
