Earlier this year, our officers responded to a critical call concerning the safety of an extremely vulnerable woman who had left her home in a distressed state.
Responding swiftly and with compassion, our officers worked closely with her care team to escort her safely back home in accordance with her care plan.
Unfortunately, just an hour later, the same officers were called back as the woman’s distress had escalated. She had escaped through a bathroom window, climbed a tree, and was in imminent danger of harming herself.
A staff member attempted to assist but had to retreat due to safety concerns as the woman moved further onto thin, dangerous branches.
When our officers arrived, they immediately recognised the life-threatening situation.
Acting without hesitation, PC Mike McVay removed his kit, climbed onto the police van, and bravely ascended the tree to reach her.
On the ground, his two colleagues provided critical support, ensuring PC McVay’s safety and maintaining calm communication with the woman to deescalate the situation.
Despite the appalling weather conditions, which were cold and wet, the officers demonstrated remarkable bravery and professionalism.
PC McVay held the woman safely in the tree until colleagues from the Fire & Rescue Service arrived. Together, they brought her down, ensuring she received the urgent care she needed.
The courageous and selfless actions of PC McVay, supported by his colleagues, undoubtedly saved the woman’s life.
Recognising this act of bravery, PC McVay was nominated for the Royal Humane Society’s Honorary Testimonial Parchment Certificate — an award honouring life-saving bravery.
And at a ceremony held at our Headquarters last month, he received this prestigious recognition.
Congratulations to PC Mike McVay on a thoroughly well-deserved award.
