I would advise anyone who would like to join the Specials to go for it. Be patient as the recruitment process can be competitive and may take time. Do your research to understand the role. Enhance your communication skills and mainly stay positive, embrace challenges and learn from experiences.
I first applied to join Suffolk Police five-years-ago. I was at the end of maternity leave and looking for a new career path. My desire was to serve the community and contribute to public safety. After passing Police Search, I attended an interview where I was offered to join the Special Constabulary to gain more experience in Law enforcement. I was delighted to accept.
As soon as I started my training my husband was posted to North Yorkshire and luckily North Yorkshire Police (NYP) accepted me as a trainee and I was able to continue.
Balancing family commitments while pursuing my career aspirations and supporting my husband's military career was undoubtedly challenging, but it's also a testament to my resilience and dedication. I also started to work for Royal British Legion as wellbeing assistant in social care.
I attested in January 2020. Soon afterwards Covid hit and everything changed, including policing. I was assigned to Harrogate and Ripon where I work with the Neighbourhood team as well as the Response Unit. Being a Special has given me great opportunities to try different aspects of policing. From attending 999 calls, road traffic collisions, public order and events, mainly always be there to support regular police officers.
Being a Special Constable is a truly rewarding role, but it also requires commitment and determination, especially as English is not my first language.
