Make the right call before kick-off. Don’t drink or drug drive

Last night we increased our patrols as communities across the county came together to watch the first England game of the World Cup. Dedicated patrols were deployed in cities, towns, rural areas and key night-time economy locations, ensuring a visible presence to keep people safe and deter drink and drug driving.

Although many drivers thankfully provided negative drug and alcohol samples last night, unfortunately we still have individuals currently in custody who did not.

One of the highest readings recorded was in Skipton. At 00:05hrs this morning, an officer observed a white VW Polo travelling at speed towards Bradley village. When stopped, the driver attempted to walk away but was detained by officers. They noted that she appeared to be under the influence of drink or drugs due to her slurred speech and behaviour.

A roadside breath test was conducted, which returned a positive result of 141 - four times over the legal limit of 35. A woman in her 20s was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the drink-drive limit and currently remains in police custody.

As the World Cup is now underway, we are reminding everyone to enjoy the football responsibly and think ahead before you head out. Driving under the influence of drink or drugs not only puts you at risk but also endangers everyone else on the road.

Over the next few weeks we will be carrying out proactive enforcement activity, including increased high-visibility patrols during match nights and into the following morning. This includes targeted stop checks and road-side operations, particularly in the early hours and morning after matches, when drivers may still be over the legal limit or affected by drugs. These checkpoints will take place at random locations across the county, focusing on routes out of towns and areas where large numbers of people gather to watch the games.

Chief Inspector Tom Ibbetson from North Yorkshire Police said: “We know people want to enjoy the World Cup, but it’s vital that you plan your journey home before you go out.

“Whether that means arranging a lift, booking a taxi or staying over, there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired.

“You will see increased high-visibility patrols and stop check points, particularly the morning after matches, and we will take robust action against anyone who chooses to drive under the influence.”

The images shared here show officers out on patrol last night in York, Harrogate and Ripon as part of our ongoing campaign. Our message is simple: enjoy the football, plan ahead, and never take the risk of drink or drug driving.
