Charlotte Langan was 23-years-old when she started training as a Special Constable.
The best thing about becoming a police officer, paid, or not, is that you see and experience things you never will in any other job and I believe that it is a privilege to see both the good and bad. The bad jobs will encourage you to reflect on yours and others actions, and the good is ultimately what keeps you coming back for more, and a reminder of why you do what you do.
What initially put you off becoming a Police Officer but you have overcome it since joining?
Honestly, the thing that put me off at first was that Special Constables don’t get a salary. However, I had known for quite I few years that I wanted to become a police officer and even though I don’t get a wage, I genuinely love what I do. When I go on duty I don’t even think about the fact that I am not getting paid. From the start of my training, to the present I have really enjoyed every second and I still feel like part of the team even though I am not constantly shift working with the regulars.
Before joining what did you believe about policing that you now know is totally different?
I was worried before I joined that my colleagues would be very serious and that the police station environment would be very regimented and cold. I was very wrong about this, police officers have some of the best senses of humour and everyone I have met has been approachable and friendly. Even as a volunteer I have a great leadership team who I feel confident enough contact on a regular basis when I need help or advice.
