Drew Mansell was 24-years-old when he started training as a Special Constable.
The camaraderie within the force is fantastic. No one is left alone to face tasks they’re unsure about, and the sense of teamwork is strong. Joining the Special Constabulary has not only been rewarding but has also supported me significantly in my day-to-day work. I can’t recommend it enough!
What do you find most rewarding about being a Special Constable?
What I find most rewarding about being a Special Constable is having the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Working as a neighbourhood policing officer, I’ve come to see that the most meaningful moments aren’t always about the fast-paced action but often come from the quieter, more personal interactions. Being there for someone when they’re at their lowest—whether that means helping someone lost, preventing a theft, or sitting with someone in crisis, even in the pouring rain or freezing snow—can truly change someone’s life, and that’s incredibly fulfilling.
Connecting with the local community to prevent crime is another part I find very rewarding. It’s not only about enforcing the law but also working alongside businesses and residents to put preventive measures in place. This proactive approach builds trust and makes our communities safer and more resilient.
Being a Special Constable also keeps me active and gives me the chance to develop a wide range of skills. I’ve gained a deep understanding of the community, formed valuable relationships, and learned so much that supports me in my everyday life. The experiences and connections I’ve built make this role truly rewarding.”
What was your main motivation for joining North Yorkshire Police Special Constabulary?
To support my local community and give back to those who need it most. I believe in helping people feel safe and secure, making sure everyone can enjoy where they live, work, and visit without fear. While I initially aspired to join a British force – originally the Navy – an injury from my time as a semi-professional rugby player took that path out of reach. Still, my commitment to service remained strong. I continued volunteering as an instructor with the Royal Navy and the local sea scout troop, which eventually led me to the opportunity to serve as a Special Constable.
For me, being a Special Constable is about aligning my values with action. I believe that everyone deserves support and safety in their community, and this role allows me to contribute to that ideal in a tangible way. I’m also eager to further develop my leadership and communication skills, both for this role and my full-time job. The chance to serve, connect with others, and make a difference in people’s lives has been an incredibly rewarding experience.”
What would you say to someone considering becoming a Special Constable?
The most compelling reason I can give you is the chance to make a real difference—not only for others but also for yourself. The impact you can have on the community is unmatched, and the personal development you gain is invaluable. The skills you’ll develop are incredibly transferable to your day job and everyday life, providing benefits that go far beyond policing.
My advice? Just go for it. You might be surprised at the unique strengths you bring to the team. Although there might be initial apprehension about joining, there’s nothing to fear. From fellow constables to the Senior Leadership Team, everyone is deeply supportive and appreciative of what we do as Specials. You’ll find yourself in a new family of friends and colleagues, all looking out for one another and committed to the same goals.
