Nargas Nasim started training as a Special Constable at the age of 38.
I really like how no day is the same, you can be dealing with incidents involving weapons, crime prevention events, night-time economy patrols or reassurance patrols. Also as a Special Constable you have many opportunities to take part in pre-planned operations which is very exciting.
What do you find most rewarding about being a Special Constable?
Putting on my uniform and working closely with the public to build trust in policing, as well as gaining their trust and respect. It’s so rewarding especially when I am listening to people’s concerns, providing real resolutions or offering them support in sometimes dangerous situations.
One of the best parts is helping people, those jobs make a real difference and taking criminals off the streets.
I have developed a strong awareness of public safety and have consistently demonstrated my ability to stay calm and effective in high pressure situations.
Being a Special Constable, I have been able to learn all about law enforcement which has equipped me with the necessary communications and collaboration skills to work effectively within a public safety framework. You can be dealing with complex and sensitive incidents that require clear reasoning and evidence gathering, being required to think on your feet and problem solve.
What was your main motivation for joining North Yorkshire Police Special Constabulary?
I have family and friends in the police and I wanted to stay in touch with that world and frontline, to give back to my community and intervene in people's lives in a positive manner. For me it offered an opportunity to strive for the greater good both in my own personal life and in the community.
What do your friends and family think of you being a Volunteer Police Officer?
My family and friends are immensely proud of me and what I have achieved so far as a Special Constable, helping to celebrate my achievements and understanding how much being a Special Constable means to me. They have seen my confidence grow every day. I grew up with morals and values and completely understand policing and the values the police stand for.
They did worry at first, because of what we all see daily on the news but, understand that not everything on the news reflects what officers see daily. They understand I may have to run towards danger but not everything that I’m exposed to is life-threatening. They are aware that I will continually receive training and support throughout my career as a special Constable to help me manage the demands of policing.
