  • Priority:

Retail Theft & Commercial Burglary - Continuous positive action against the most prolific retail crime offenders. We work closely along Retailers and commercial premises owners to implement preventative measures and quickly pursue offenders and support businesses overcoming

    Issued 04 August 2026

    Action taken:

Whilst out on ASB patrols in the city centre, our Neighbourhood Policing Team responded to reports a report of a shop theft in progress. They responded quickly to the scene and detained a male from outside force area. The suspect was arrested and taken to York Police station and give a positive outcome disposal.

Our Neighbourhood Policing teams know the importance of responding quickly to reports of shop theft to support local businesses and bring people to justice.

We conduct regular visits to retailers to provide crime prevention advice and we are looking at other ways of sharing information and intelligence with partners to tackle to most prolific offenders.

  • Priority:

Cycle Theft in across York remains our priority. 2025 saw the launch of Op BATTERY and our use of Bike Register as a preventative marking tool and our free marking events using the technology alongside proactive enforcement saw us reduce Cycle Theft in the City Centre by 46% in a Five and a half month period. We continue our efforts York wide in this regard.

    Issued 21 August 2026

    Action taken:

Cycle Theft in Bike in York and North Yorkshire are down by 30% in the last year

As more people have opted to using bikes in recent years, like other places in the country York has seen an increase in cycle related crime. In response, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team have implemented a dedicated operation to prevent and disrupt offenders operating here. This includes conducting proactive patrols, using specialist tracker bikes, working with CCTV operators to monitor key areas 24/7 and hosting bike security events to reunite stolen bikes with their owners.

Over the last few weeks officers have been busy issuing posters across the city to advertise free bike marking events. BikeRegister is the national cycle database which is used by all UK police forces to search for stolen bicycles and reunite them with their rightful owners. Since April 2025 officers have marked 800 bikes in York with BikeRegister.

You can find your nearest bike marking event via the BikeRegister website.

Op BATTERY is both our preventative activity around Cycle Theft using Bike Register marking technology and our pro-active efforts to tackle Cycle Theft by targeting offenders, bringing them to justice and recovering stolen Cycles.
